The Voice

Marketing Economy

Working in Next, it's not surprised to spot out the underlying philosophy of the publication is -- market economy. As 楊懷康 is our spiritual leader (despite some reporters actually don't believe in or even never heard of his idea), the importance of free market is always emphasized and realised as an atmosphere around the company. To him, free market seems to be the only answer to all matters.

Well, if free market is the ultimate solution, why heads of all rich countries are sitting by the round table this week in London to try to give an answer to poverty in Africa? The fact is that while the riches get richer, the poor get poorer. If no measure is going to carry out, the poor countries would only be exploited.

From an economist point of view, perhaps they should take the role as cheap labour in a globalized world, but do they deserve a better living environment?

Actually, on the other way around, market economy raises a lot of problem. Taking media as a subject to study. Without government regulations,
Commercial media would only air programs which appeal the majority, like Korean Drama. They would keep on airing money making programs, as a result only majority would be satisfied.

It is obvious that minority group of people, which representing a bunch of top mindsets in the society, if not, at least avant garde kind, is totally ignored. As the situation goes on, more people turn their back on TV, the program would only become more and more anti-intellectual, so as the society. Inevitably, our offspring will inevitably become more and more stupid.

The question here is concerning about how to move the civilization forward. Free market economy can only give people what they need, but dare not risk to provide something beyond their desire and challenge their thoughts and existence.

The situation is especially obvious in a small market, like in Hong Kong, where no room for commercial cultural media to survive.

PS, Bollywood is going to hold a film award ceremony in Netherlands. Although most of the dutchs may never seen any indian film, or hardly know anything about bollywood, the move of indian still truly admirable. It's a true step to introduce idian film to the west by holding a ceremony not in the hometown. The show, as far as i know, would be broadcasted to the world. We don't know the rating figure, but it is already arepected move though risky at the same time.

About public housing

Dear Sir

I have read your article today firing on the new regulation of application for pubic housing on the single applicants. I must say i strongly agree with you. I am a reporter from Chinese media, but it seems that large proportion of chinese media do show their support on the new move by the Housing Authority. Most of them are viewing the issue from the resources allocation angle, few of them is really discussing about whether the new regulation is really fair or not.

Personally, I think discrimination on family status and academic qualification is obvious. As these single appilcants passed the mean test, they should be able to make the application while wether they will get the public house is another issue. Thus, I propse that young and single one should be given chance to make application, but allocation of public house should be subjected to the social condition.

Public housing is long be a problem for HK government, but I request a system in which everyone is fairly treated.

However, when i talked about my point of view with other reporters, i found almost all are against my view. They think the young and highly educated one should not abuse the social resources as they are expected to earn much later on. I fully understand their opinion (as i am the young and highly educated one too), but the core of the issue is not lying on wether you will be rich or not, it's a problem of the fairness of the system, isn't it?

It is pity to see that fairness and justice is getting thinner in Hong Kong nowaday. People are concerning about their material need rather than basic ideology(or core value, u may say).

Anyway, It's good to see your opinion, let share more next time.

What news really mean?

Edward de Bono's "Six Thinking Hats" is trying to shed new light on the traditonal thinking mode. In the past, people are trying to prove their own point of view when discussing with other people, and emphasis lay on "what is" rather than "what can be". The old approach is a kind of argumentative one which proved to be not constructive at all. As everyone is arguing they are right, they are not actually facing the problem.

It reminds me of how magazine approach a story. Magazine is different from the conventional daily. Instead of setting a POV after having all the fact analysed, Magazine is making the hypothesis first. Thus, when a reporter is told to write a report, actually, he is doing a job of collecting evidence in order to support the hypothesis. So when he finds one person's POV is favourable to him, there may be 9 people interviewed with counter-POV.

As a result, an article based on hypothesis rather than hard fact or ideology, together with biased and subjective POV is getting published. Do they really face the problem? face the fact?

Too arrogant the system is and reporters as well. I mean do they really qualified to make such a hypothesis?

I suppose not, the truth is that more senior position the reporter is promoted to, s/he will be more defensive to any doubt on their judgement and opinion, as they can't afford their profession to be challenged. But what if they are really wrong? Clearly, s/he is trapped by her own position and any new idea won't be welcomed to flush in. Stupid, isn't it?

Please always remind yourself to be humble.

Hello

The voice of familiarity,
Heard with echo,
Now pale, weightless
Heavy as well,
Pain attached.

‘round the corner of the street,
Wandering in the front of the doorway and
The gate. Shut ever after.

Hello?

Hello to me, can u?

Van Gogh version#1

I am really surprised to watch such a vivid documentary on an artist life on TV. The programme is produced by Channel 4, my favourite channel in UK focusing on TV progame in art, and was broadcasted by TVB today.

In the first episode, the early life of Van Gogh is portraited which started from his birth in
Holland, to his early working journey in Britain, and finally back to Holland after the frustration on the attempt to become a missioner for Jesus Christ.

As a 25 years old guy who always feels confused about the future, the story of Van Gogh is quite inspiring. You may think he found his own destiny and destiny in an early time, or he could not have huge artistic achievement. Indeed, the decision had to be made with a strong will, however his decision in pursuit of art fulfillment was not to be made until at the age of 27.

Before the decision came to be made, he has been doing several jobs. As his father was a very successful art dealer, he was arranged to be employed as a customer service provider in a gallery, job duty including ass-kissing to riches by praising their weary taste on art. After being fired as being missioner from the Church, he underwent a period of confusion. But finally, he finds his mission and talent on being an artist.

There were several twisting points in his early life. He might be an art dealer, book store manager, teacher or even a priest. However, the fact that he was not a good employee for the above posts made him step into an artistic path.

So the story telling us that the path for everyone comes in a different time, some may come earlier, some may come a bit later. So I guess, at least I try to believe, a true calling would be arrived finally and great achievement should come along.

Another fascinating part of Van Gogh is definitely his love life. It is reported that he fell in love with a widow, who had a son already. The portrait of the widow doesn’t look attractive at all, even a lot older than Van Gogh. Such weird pursuit on love finally scars the widow when Van Gogh tried to show his heart to her. It inevitably results in the fluctuation on his emotion. One week later, he made an even more astonishing decision, to marry a prostitute, Sien.

The decision is not hard to explain. As finally Van Gogh found a woman who was fully dependable on him and would like to stay with him for the rest of his life. The act seems to be a symbol of reassuring himself as the God of his life. However, Sien was described as unattractive and even ugly. Van Gogh actually drew a picture on her titled “sorrow”. He intended to show her strength on fighting the pains of life. The textile of the skin reminds me the roots of tree.

As Van Gogh finally came to the days with a lovely family, things should go smoothly afterward. Shouldn’t it? Well, let see.
